In January 2009, we were joined by our new Chief Executive, Chris Grigg, who invited all employees to an evening event to meet him informally. He also hosted an internal presentation to explain the background to the Company's Rights Issue.

This year, we continued to review and update all aspects of human resources including recruitment, training, appraisals and health and safety to meet best practice. Training provided to employees and managers included sessions on presentation skills, international business, financial modelling and planning in the economic downturn.

Our new Human Resources Manager, Claire Bolsover, joined in January 2009. In March, we piloted a new online 360-degree appraisal process with our senior management team. They requested anonymous feedback from up to ten people including their manager, their peers and the people who report to them. Feedback from this pilot will be reviewed.

48% of our Head Office team is female, an increase from 43% last year. 24% of our management team is female, an increase from 21% last year.

We provided our employees with more frequent updates on corporate responsibility. This was in response to their feedback in our last independent survey. Executive Officer, Peter Clarke, invited all employees to a series of presentations on Building Together. Head of the Business Group, Justin Snoxall, also sent out email updates. In March 2009, 26% of Head Office employees attended a presentation by our waste contractor, Capital Waste.

Next year, we aim to achieve 75% staff awareness of corporate responsibility initiatives. A new staff working group, comprising volunteers from across the business, will also identify ways to reduce waste and electricity use per full-time equivalent by 5%.

We worked with our Head Office team to embed corporate responsibility within all levels of our business.

  • British Land’s Head Office, York House, is a well-managed, low-risk business environment. A robust health and safety management system is in place, which includes thorough risk assessments, inductions for new starters and workstation reviews, as well as training in manual handling, first aid and fire evacuation. This helps to ensure that all employees and contractors can work safely at York House, as demonstrated in the extremely low number of reportable incidents.
