Low-carbon energy

We sourced 63% of all the electricity for our UK and Continental European portfolio from Climate Change Levy exempt sources, compared to our target of 80%.

Wind Turbine

Giltbrook Retail Park

We undertake feasibility studies on all our new developments for on-site low-carbon and zero-carbon energy sources. In autumn 2008, we completed construction on Giltbrook Retail Park near Nottingham. This scheme includes two wind turbines, as well as solar thermal panels that heat water for the management suite.

In our existing portfolio, we commissioned a further feasibility study into wind turbines at Teesside Shopping Park in Stockton-on-Tees and a new study at Silverlink Shopping Park in North Shields. We want to be confident that any wind turbines that we install will generate enough clean power to be both environmentally and financially worthwhile. We are reviewing options at Teesside. We sold Silverlink in March 2009.

We also investigated two low-carbon local energy generation schemes for Broadwalk House in London in London EC2. Unfortunately, neither of these schemes demonstrated an appropriate return on investment. Next year, we will investigate the feasibility of on-site or near-site low-carbon energy sources for our London office estates. This will build on work undertaken by London First and the London Development Agency.

Scope of resource use data

We are also incorporating low-carbon and zero-carbon energy sources on a number of our developments.
