Waste management
We diverted 85% of managed waste from landfill, recycling 59% of waste and incinerating 26%.
We piloted a new Fit-out Waste Guide at 201 Bishopsgate and the Broadgate Tower, working in partnership with our occupiers. This led to 97% of fit-out waste being re-used or recycled, diverting 1,693 tonnes of waste from landfill. Next year, we will be applying this Guide to all our major fit-outs, targeting 90% recycling in the fit-out of common parts.
At our retail parks, 75% of managed waste was recycled. This strong performance was largely due to high recycling rates at Silverlink in North Shields. We sold Silverlink in March 2009. Retail parks accounted for 53% of our waste.
At our shopping centres, 39% was recycled, compared to our target of 50%. However, we diverted 96% from landfill through a combination of recycling and incineration. Shopping centres accounted for 27% of our waste.
At our offices, 43% was recycled, compared to our target of 60%. However, we diverted 95% from landfill through a combination of recycling and incineration. Offices accounted for 20% of our waste.
Next year, we will target 60% recycling across our office portfolio and 50% across our retail portfolio, to drive performance. We will continue to consider costs when making decisions about waste management, as we are working to cut service charges for our occupiers.
We aim to send zero managed waste to landfill from our entire portfolio by 2012. To make progress towards this, next year we aim to divert all office waste from landfill and 80% of retail waste.
