Embedding corporate responsibility

Corporate responsibility is now managed by people within each business area, using the same management approach as in the rest of the business.

Executive Officer, Peter Clarke, reports to the Board on our corporate responsibility key performance indicators each quarter. These provide an overview of progress against our annual targets in seven business critical areas and a sample is independently audited each year.

Our Asset Managers monitor and drive the performance of our managing agents on a number of measures, including corporate responsibility. Asset Managers hold one-on-one meetings with managing agents to discuss performance each year. Head of the Business Group, Justin Snoxall, also leads twice-yearly meetings between members of our Head Office team, managing agents and selected property managers. This provides an opportunity to report back on progress against corporate responsibility targets, share best practice, and discuss issues and opportunities.

Our Developments Team manages the performance of our project teams, including architects and building contractors. This year, we also appointed Sarah Cary to a new role, Sustainable Developments Executive, to improve consistency across our development portfolio. Sarah works with our project teams to ensure that our Sustainability Brief is applied from the earliest stages of development, to monitor performance against our corporate targets and to set site-specific targets. This year, our Environmental Management System for developments achieved ISO:14001 certification.

Our approach is underpinned by a range of policies and documents. This year we introduced a Fit-out Waste Guide and a Carbon Reduction Memorandum of Understanding.

  • British Land provided employees with updates on corporate responsibility initiatives, and this has been well received. In the coming year, there will also be a regular newsletter and staff working group to raise environmental awareness.
