Sustainable travel

We signed a pioneering agreement with the Highways Agency that will encourage best practice in sustainable transport on developments.

Nigel Webb, and Graham Dalton,

Nigel Webb, Head of Developments at British Land and Graham Dalton, Chief Executive of the Highways Agency

Our Memorandum of Understanding to deliver a consistent approach to transport on all major developments was signed by Chief Executive of the Highways Agency, Graham Dalton, and Head of Developments at British Land, Nigel Webb.

The agreement aims to move journeys away from cars and towards public transport, cycling and walking. This will cut carbon emissions, as well as benefitting local people by promoting active lifestyles, reducing the amount of particulate matter in the atmosphere and alleviating congestion on roads. It will also facilitate the planning process by minimising the impact of developments on local highways infrastructure. Occupiers will then benefit from a completed development that offers good accessibility and a pleasant local environment.

We worked in partnership with the Highways Agency on the River Don District masterplan in Sheffield to trial the agreement, which will now be applied to all our major new developments. Planning Executive at British Land, Miles Price, also sits on the Highways Agency's National Developers Forum.

The Highways Agency is encouraging other developers to adopt this approach and work more closely with them. It has also entered the initiative for a National Transport Award.

We have been encouraging sustainable travel for a number of years. This has involved working with local authorities, community groups, transport providers and occupiers, as well as organisations such as the Corporation of London, the Highways Agency, Network Rail and Transport for London.
