Waste and materials
We diverted 94% of demolition waste from landfill, exceeding our target of 80%, and over 80% of construction waste, exceeding our target of 70%.

It does not make financial or environmental sense for our contractors to order more materials than necessary for our development sites. Nor does it make sense for us to send materials to landfill that could easily be re-used on-site or sent for recycling.
We are pleased to report that all of our major project contractors are exceeding our waste management targets, further improving on last year's positive performance.
This year, we continued to set challenging site-specific sustainability targets, working with our project teams to drive performance. We also worked with contractors to improve the comprehensiveness and accuracy of data.
An estimated 24% of materials used in our new buildings contained recycled content, exceeding our target of 20%. We calculate net waste using a tool developed by the national waste advisory body, WRAP.
Next year, we are raising the standards further, with a minimum of 85% of construction waste to be diverted from landfill, and 95% of demolition waste. We will also work with our contractors to reduce net waste generated by our construction activities. At least 25% of total materials used will contain recycled content.
