Water management
Ropemaker is set to reduce mains water use by 50%, compared to current standards. Water efficiency devices and rainwater harvesting will save an estimated 5,400m³ of water each year.

The River Don District masterplan includes extensive flood defences
We continued to work with our design teams to mitigate flood risks and incorporate water efficiency measures. This helps to future-proof our portfolio, protecting us and our customers against the predicted effects of climate change. Climate change is expected to increase the risk of flooding significantly and to reduce the amount of water available by up to 80% during the summer months by 2050*.
Our Sustainability Brief requires our project teams to:
- Identify opportunities to reduce water consumption through the use of water efficient technologies and fittings
- Minimise potable water use by harvesting and re-using rainwater and grey water where feasible
- Reduce and, where possible, eliminate water discharge during peak storms, to alleviate local flooding.
It also includes a number of recommendations, such as installing leak monitoring equipment and water meters.
We started working with our contractors to measure water use during construction. Next year, we will work with them to improve the comprehensiveness and accuracy of this data.
