Managing the impact

Building Crossrail is a huge engineering challenge. London will feel the effects of large scale construction from 2010 for a prolonged period. The area around and below Broadgate is no exception.

There will be considerable construction work at the front of 100 Liverpool Street and in the immediate vicinity.

However it is proposed that a 3.6 metre hoarding be provided around work sites. Concrete pumps, lorries and compressors will be housed in enclosures when in operation. This is intended to reduce ongoing noise to acceptable levels.

It is currently estimated that the western section of Liverpool Street between Old Broad Street and Blomfield Street will be closed to traffic for four years. Bus services and access for taxis will also be re-routed. Pedestrian access to 100 Liverpool Street and those buildings on the south side of the street will however be maintained at all times.

The worksite to relocate the electricity substation will be positioned in a cul-de-sac just north of Broad Street Avenue. Work on this aspect is expected to take five years with up to six lorry movements per day.

To minimise disruption to road users in Old Broad Street it is proposed that, where possible, construction and excavated materials will be transported by road and deliveries made at night or at weekends.

We will bring you additional details about the various impacts and temporary arrangements that will be put in place during the construction period as soon as they are agreed and published.

Crossrail and their contractors will be committed to providing community relations personnel, who will be able to provide appropriate up-to-date information and to be the first line of response to resolve issues of concern to people and businesses along the route.

Crossrail will ensure that occupiers of affected properties near to worksites will be kept regularly and well informed by the community relations team. Contractors will be required to provide advance information sheets of the works being carried out. These will detail the expected duration of the works and any expected disruption which may be caused and the measures being taken to minimise or mitigate any adverse impacts of the works.

The 24 hours per day, 7 days per week Crossrail Help Desk number (0345 602 3813), will be maintained and advertised to handle enquiries and any possible complaints regarding construction activities from the general public It will also act as the first point of contact and information in the case of emergency.

Should any disputes or unresolved matters occur which cannot be dealt with equably in the first instance by all parties, an independent Complaints Commissioner will be appointed by the Secretary of State.

Please contact the Crossrail Helpdesk if you have any enquiries. They can be reached on the above number, 24 hours a day, or by email to: helpdesk@crossrail.co.uk.
