Waste and materials

We aim to send zero managed waste to landfill by 2012. This year, we diverted 83% of waste from landfill at our properties and 86% on our developments.

Our new Sustainability Brief for Management requires our managing agents to develop Waste Management Plans for all our larger properties and estates. They focused on increasing recycling rates by improving waste segregation facilities on site and by working more closely with local waste contractors. They also worked with occupiers, encouraging their staff to use the segregation facilities.

Our Sustainable Developments Executive, Sarah Cary, worked closely with building contractors and sub-contractors on our development sites to monitor waste management. In October, members of the British Land developments team visited a materials recovery facility used to process waste from a number of our developments. Sarah commented: “It was a very informative trip which, going forward, will help us enormously to manage our approach to construction waste better.”

At Eastgate

We sent zero waste to landfill, saving £32,000 in landfill taxes.

The team at Eastgate Shopping Centre in Basildon significantly increased recycling to 79% this year, from 68% last year. The remaining 21% of waste was incinerated with energy recovery. The team worked closely with retailers and carried out extensive on-site segregation of waste. The Centre also provides shoppers with recycling facilities in the mall and car parks.

At Pilgrim Street

We re-used or recycled 97% of fit-out waste, diverting 488 tonnes from landfill.

11 Pilgrim Street in London EC2 was a strip-out and refurbishment of a part-occupied building. Our contractor, 8build, applied our new Fit-out Waste Guide.

“8build went to great lengths to recycle waste, despite not being able to use the service area. They segregated waste into multiple bins during the day, which they then took into the basement, before bringing them up to street level when the waste truck arrived. They also reported pro-actively on waste management.”
