The beach came to Broadgate in the City of London this summer when Action for Kids ran a charity volleyball tournament.

Ten teams from organisations all over London competed in the event to raise funds for young people with physical and learning disabilities from around the UK. In the run-up to the games, over 100 local school children were delighted to try beach volleyball for the first time.

“Although building the beach on Broadgate was a hard task it was tremendous to see so many school children and adults enjoy themselves playing volleyball in the sand. All the volunteers and contractors worked tirelessly to make this event such a success and help raise funds for such a worthwhile cause.”

Wheelchair basketball players from London’s finest clubs, Force and Raiders, also battled it out on Finsbury Avenue Square, encouraging able-bodied people to have a go at playing in a wheelchair. Some of the teams even got the chance to train with members of the Great Britain Beach Volleyball Team - getting tips from pros Gregg Weaver and Steve Grotowski. Mitsubishi UFJ Securities International took home the prestigious winners’ trophy.

Working together

Action for Kids was involved in each aspect of the event, which was made possible thanks to National Lottery funding from Sport England. Virgin Active also gave players fitness sessions to help them to prepare for the day.
