Retail training at Birstall and The Source

Great retail insight for local students
Building on good local relationships

“We were amazed at how much work goes into making a shop, something that as a customer you don't often think about. Thank you to Denis, M&S and Wates for making this insight possible.”

- Head of Business Studies at Mirfield Free Grammar and Sixth Form,
Allison Simpson

Local students donned hard hats to see behind the scenes at the fit out of M&S Simply Food at Birstall Shopping Park in Leeds.

This was a unique opportunity for students to see an area of retail that would normally be behind closed doors. One of them has even decided to pursue a career in shop fitting. The new M&S Simply Food store officially opened on 29th July.

Working together

This is part of the Park’s ongoing support for Mirfield Free Grammar and Sixth Form. M&S and Wates shop fitters were proud to show the store to the students.

Sheffield Showcase

Young students on a Visual Merchandising course at The Source at Meadowhall in Sheffield are working with artists and designers to transform shop windows left vacant in the city centre until a multi-million pound redevelopment gets underway. They are learning first hand how to create eye-catching images that appeal to the public, with new displays going up each month.

Working together

The project is coordinated and funded by Sheffield City Council, and delivered in partnership with The Source and Creative Sheffield.

Retail students were joined by Sheffield City Council leader, Paul Scriven, and representatives from The Source

“Initiatives such as this are a great opportunity to work in partnership with other businesses and, in this case, the local council. This particular project has been a great way to drive footfall to an otherwise quiet area of a city centre.”
