Head Office carbon reduction partnership

The external lighting system at our Head Office uses energy-efficient LED bulbs.

We have cut carbon emissions and energy bills at our Head Office by working in partnership with the Building Manager and all office occupiers.

British Land, Broadgate Estates, Bunzl, Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (London Office) Pte Ltd, hurleypalmerflatt and Moor Park Capital Partners LLP, have all signed a Carbon Reduction Memorandum of Understanding. We meet quarterly to review resource use performance and agree initiatives to improve energy efficiency.

“We reduced gas use to a mere 2 kWh this summer, from 122,054 kWh last summer. We look forward to identifying further opportunities to cut carbon emissions at York House when our new energy monitoring system goes live.”

The York House Environmental Working Group agreed to the installation of a new weather compensation system, preventing activation of boilers when external temperatures are above 15ºC. They also agreed to adjust passive infrared sensors (PIRs), switching lights off within 20 minutes after motion detection, and to reduce thermostat deadbands to within plus or minus 2ºC, so that heating and cooling are never working simultaneously.

“We have established carbon reduction agreements with Building Managers and occupiers in eight of our multi-let office buildings, exceeding our target for this year. Through Environmental Working Groups in each of these buildings we are now working together to set challenging resource efficiency targets and achieve real reductions.”

By working with our Building Managers, staff and occupiers we have also significantly increased the proportion of waste recycled to 64% since January, up from 45% last year. 98% of all managed waste at York House has been successfully diverted from landfill through recycling and incineration, saving £4,000 in landfill taxes. †

† Waste data from 1 January to 30 Nov 2009, compared to the same period in 2008. Savings based on landfill taxes of £40 per tonne from 1 April 2009 and £32 per tonne up to 31 March 2009.
