Energy savings at St Stephen’s
£46,000 forecast annual savings for retailers*
400,000 kWh forecast electricity savings compared to last year*Savings of £14,000 on reduced maximum supply capacity required and of £32,000 on reduced electricity use compared to last year, based on £0.08 per kWh.
The team at St Stephen’s introduced a range of initiatives that will cut energy use by an estimated 12%.
They replaced standard lightbulbs with energy-efficient LED alternatives and installed high-efficiency Dyson hand-dryers in all public toilets. They also set internal lighting to turn off automatically overnight as early as possible without affecting operations, reduced daytime lighting levels in the car parks by 50% and installed motion sensors to automatically control lights in all toilet and service corridors.
“The business is now run more efficiently, and we have started a rolling program to reduce power consumption even more, and to examine other utility bills. Next year, we will share the actual savings data with our retailers and invite them to apply these ideas to their individual units.”

The team at St Stephen’s also worked with energy broker, Direct Energy Purchasing, to analyse peak daytime and overnight electricity usage since the Centre opened. They were then able to halve the maximum supply capacity required, further reducing electricity costs.
Working Together
The energy efficiency initiatives were introduced in association with the Carbon Trust, local council environmental groups and local electrical equipment suppliers. Energy broker, Direct Energy Purchasing, negotiated the reduced maximum supply capacity.
